Good read!
Really funny insights on the trials and tribulations of working with licensed content.
Such a cool idea ... plus it looks like it was pinched from the Batcave.
The article seems to suggest genres are owned by specific regions of the world, which is silly.
I've played so many awesome Japanese games over the past six years, during which time the the Nintendo Wii has loomed large over the gaming landscape and arguably had more influence than anything else.
Of course, it's been criticised as being a 'casual console' by the Western press ...
Anyone who played Kinect Sports remembers when Rare made good games.
Viva Pinata, Kameo and Nuts & Bolts were also top titles. I get a bit tired of these articles waxing lyrical about 'past triumphs' such as bloated 3D collect-a-thons, wonky sub-Mario platform games and sub-Mario Kart racers, and a fighting game that no-one takes seriously.
But this bit really made me laugh: "Innovative, moving, and graphically superior to 99% of the other SN...
Games change during development, and having followed this game over the past year I'm quite aware of what it was and what it is.
I certainly do not feel lied to. There was nothing sinister in making the game on-rails - quite the opposite, it was a decision taken with the game's best interest at heart, even though they must have known it would open the way for vultures like this particular critic.
At any rate we should expect reviews to tell us what th...
How's that a valid complaint in the review of the final product - UNLESS the guy thinks on-rails games are lesser than free-roaming games?
It's quite funny how similar this is to the first Fable, where it turned out you couldn't plant a tree and see it grow. A series of broke promises ... and yet the games themselves are decent enough.
The self-loathing words of a man ashamed to be a videogamer.
No it's not stupid, or intelligent, or jealous, or squeamish, or a jaffa cake.
It's a machine that recognises specific motion inputs and is dependent on the player doing them properly. Typically this guy assumes the fault is with Kinect rather than with him, despite probably also wondering why his arms are throbbing with pain after playing for several hours!
"Strangely, it seems as if the longer you play, the more likely you are to encounter a problem."
Basically the longer you play the more tired your arms get, and the more you start flailing around instead of doing the required actions. It's not rocket science..
Meh score, but at least they didn't trash it.
Also how badass is this:
"During one section near the end, for instance, with the fully upgraded magic arsenal at my disposal and Kinect firing on all cylinders in my gaming space, I faced down a pack of fast-leaping Balverine wolves.
"I grabbed one with my left hand and spun it, sending him into a dizzy, stunned state. At the same time, I cocked my right arm back to charge my defau...
Infuriatingly smug writer, lol. "It's on rails y'know, hyuck hyuck hyuck."
Oh you mean like Virtua Cop 2, After Burner, Sin and Punishment, Space Harrier, Rez, Starfox, Time Crisis, Child of Eden ... some of the greatest games? Idiot.
It's so obviously a strategic move, Ubisoft might as well have just been up front and said they don't dare go toe to toe with New Super Mario Bros.
"Making sure it lives up to expectations", lawl.
Disagreed!
Coolest thing.
Hopefully it's not too much longer before the next Xbox and Kinect are unveiled.
All enthusiasm for the genre was killed stone dead following the bloated excesses of the N64 collect-a-thon era ... however, thanks to the likes of NSMB and Sonic Generations, platform games have come back in style.
Basically the same sort of poop that was thrown at Jet Set Radio last month. "What, you mean I can actually fail at this game if I play badly? Screw that! Back to Arkham City!"
:P
#1 Rayman Legends.
It's like they were playing an ill-advised game of chicken against the New Super Mario Bros. U freighter before swerving at the last minute.
Happy enough to get Rayman Legends at the start of next year as that was more or less my plan anyway!
They did a crossover racer instead, also tennis.
And they're still not even using all the franchises they could. It hurts.
